The One Skill That Improves Your Driving Dramatically
Learn the slow-smooth-fast method for calmer steering, acceleration, and braking that makes every drive safer and more comfortable.
Some driving mistakes are obvious. Excessive speeding, causing accidents, and running red lights are clear signs of a bad driver. But avoiding those mistakes does not automatically make someone good behind the wheel. A driver can follow the basic rules and still make every trip uncomfortable, inefficient, and riskier than it needs to be.
The difference often comes down to smoothness. If passengers are bracing themselves, spilling drinks, or feeling sick, the driver is responsible. The main sign of a bad or average driver is not always dramatic recklessness; it is the inability to accelerate, brake, and steer without abrupt movements.
Why Smoothness Matters
The biggest disadvantage of aggressive driving is the increased risk of an accident. Whenever you make abrupt inputs, whether you are accelerating, braking, or turning, it becomes easier to upset the car. Once the car is upset, it becomes easier to lose traction with the road.
That is why every good driver needs to learn smoothness first. Smooth driving is not about being timid or slow forever. It is about controlling how the car receives each command. A smooth driver gives the tires a progressive request instead of shocking them with sudden demands.
Slow, Smooth, Fast
There is a useful maxim associated with special forces, especially Navy SEALs: in order to be fast, you have to be smooth, and in order to be smooth, you have to be slow. The same idea applies perfectly to driving.
If you want to learn how to drive smoothly, you have to learn how to drive slowly first. Most people already know how to move a car slowly, so the best place to develop this skill is ordinary city driving. In Vancouver, for example, many city roads have a 50 km/h speed limit, which makes it easier to practise smooth car control at lower speeds.
The principle goes beyond military training. It is used in racing, too. Even though public roads are not race tracks and should not be treated that way, the concept still applies in the real world. It also appears in everyday skills. When we first learn to talk, we do it slowly so we can speak clearly and coherently. We only become faster after the basic control is there. Driving works the same way. You cannot expect yourself to drive faster safely before you first learn how to drive slowly and smoothly.
Accelerating Smoothly
The first input to practise is acceleration. The key is to squeeze the gas pedal smoothly, consistently, and at a slow rate. Do not treat the accelerator like an on-off switch.
This matters even more when conditions are wet. In a front-wheel-drive car, smashing the throttle on a wet surface can make the front tires lose traction and spin instead of pulling the car forward effectively. The goal is to press the pedal gently enough that you do not feel a jerky surge every time you accelerate.
A common objection is that nobody wants to accelerate painfully slowly all the time. But smooth acceleration does not mean uselessly slow acceleration. It means building speed in a controlled way. In the city, harsh acceleration usually just creates harsh braking a few seconds later. If you jump on the throttle from a light and traffic ahead is not moving quickly enough, you immediately have to jump on the brakes. That is inefficient and uncomfortable.
When you accelerate hard for no reason, the engine has produced energy to move the car, and then you waste that energy almost immediately by braking. A smoother launch gives you more time to coast. In modern cars, coasting without touching the gas pedal is a useful part of efficient driving because the car is no longer being asked to keep accelerating. The practical goal is to maximize that coasting effect whenever traffic allows it.
This is why repeated hard acceleration and hard braking at every stoplight makes little sense. It mostly wastes the energy you just asked the engine to produce and makes the drive feel rough.
There is another benefit: smooth acceleration teaches you how your car finds traction most efficiently. In an empty parking lot on a wet surface, the problem is easy to feel. If I select a sportier throttle response and simply smash the accelerator, the traction control warning can appear and the driven wheels can chirp because they have lost grip with the road. That is the car telling you the input was too abrupt for the available traction. A progressive throttle input lets the tires stay connected and lets the car accelerate with control.
Braking Without the Final Jerk
Every acceleration eventually has to be followed by braking, so the next skill is smooth braking. Many drivers can identify the right braking zone and begin slowing at the right time, but they still make the car jerk at the very end of the stop.
The smoother method is to go into the brake pedal progressively, then slightly release pressure just before the car comes to a full stop. That small release removes the final lurch. Some people call this a limousine stop; I like to call it a chauffeur stop as well. The point is that the car should settle instead of pitching forward at the last moment.
The opposite is easy to recognize. A driver brakes, the car reaches zero, and the whole cabin jerks. It may not feel dramatic to the person pressing the pedal, but passengers feel it immediately.
A useful mental image is a full water bottle placed on the dashboard. Your goal is to stop the car without spilling anything from it. That image forces you to think about the shape of the brake input, not just whether the car stopped.
Harsh braking has a safety downside as well. If you have ridden a bicycle, you know that grabbing too much rear brake can make the rear end slide sideways. A car can also become unsettled if you brake too harshly, especially in wet conditions and especially while turning. Too much abrupt braking during a turn can upset the balance of the car and increase the risk of losing control.
The correct habit is to apply brake pressure consistently and smoothly. You do not smash the brake pedal unless it is an emergency. In ordinary driving, smooth pressure keeps the car more settled.
Steering Inputs Should Be Smooth Too
The same principle applies to steering. The steering wheel is the main tool for turning the car, and your hand inputs need to be smooth. You do not want to snap the wheel quickly in one direction or the other.
For a normal city lane change, signal first, then move the steering wheel very smoothly. A good lane change can feel almost imperceptible from inside the car. The wheel may barely look like it is turning, yet the car still changes lanes cleanly. What you want to avoid is diving into the next lane with a quick flick of the wheel. That is unsafe, too fast, and annoying to other road users.
Smooth steering is partly about comfort, but it is also about predictability. A gradual steering input keeps the car settled and keeps your movements from feeling abrupt to everyone around you.
Turning at Intersections and Stop Signs
The same idea becomes obvious in neighborhoods, at intersections, and around stop signs. Some drivers like to jiggle the wheel back and forth while turning. It may feel active, but it is not very effective. It adds unnecessary corrections and makes the car feel less settled.
Even when making a U-turn, the steering motion should be smooth. A large steering input does not need to be a violent steering input. When the car is moving slowly enough and the hands are controlled, tight turns become much easier.
For a basic low-speed right turn, one method is to hold the wheel with the right hand prepared for the turn, then shuffle through the steering movement in a controlled way around the 9-and-3 hand position. After the car turns, allow the wheel to center itself while guiding it. For a left turn, the same concept applies with the left hand leading the movement. The exact hand technique can vary; there are many ways to shuffle the wheel. The important part is that the motion stays continuous and smooth instead of frantic.
When you need to make a U-turn, you can use the same principle. You do not need to overcomplicate the hand placement. Set the car up slowly, turn the wheel progressively, and let the wheel return while you guide it back. Once the technique is mastered at low speed, you can turn at a faster rate while still being smooth and safe.
Before any faster U-turn practice, check that there is nobody behind you and nobody approaching from either side. With the area clear, the car can be turned more quickly while the steering remains controlled. The result is not a rushed maneuver; it is a smooth maneuver performed with confidence.
Applying Smooth Inputs on the Highway
After learning smooth acceleration, braking, and steering in the city, the same skills can be applied on the highway, where speeds are higher and the consequences of abrupt inputs are larger.
Start with the on-ramp. If the highway ahead looks crowded and nobody is directly behind you on the ramp, it can help to leave room in front of you. By being slower for a moment, you create more space to accelerate into. That space gives you time to build speed smoothly instead of rushing into traffic with a sudden throttle input.
Once the gap is there, squeeze into the throttle progressively. The acceleration can still be spirited if the car is capable of it and the conditions allow it. Smooth does not mean weak. The important thing is that the throttle input, steering input, and merge all remain progressive. On a wet day, that matters even more.
During the merge, the steering should be calm as well. If another vehicle needs space, give it room, the way you might leave room for a Jeep already in the traffic flow. A good merge is not only about reaching highway speed; it is about entering the flow of traffic without surprising anyone and without upsetting your own car. When the throttle and steering are smooth, a spirited merge can be enjoyable and still safe.
The same pattern applies when passing. If you want to pass a slower Lexus in the left passing lane, do not jab the throttle. Smoothly go into the accelerator, gain speed, and complete the pass safely. After the pass, return to the cruising lane on the right when it is appropriate.
Highway braking uses the same smoothness. If you are approaching a slower truck ahead at more than 100 km/h and need to reduce speed, go into the brake pedal progressively and match the truck’s speed without drama. The higher speed does not make smoothness less important; it makes it more important.
Lane changes at highway speed should also be as smooth as possible. Signal well in advance, then turn the steering wheel gently. The steering wheel may hardly appear to move, but the car will still transition into the lane. That is exactly the point: the car should move with one calm, progressive input rather than a sharp command.
Smoothness Is How Good Drivers Go Fast Safely
Good drivers, and especially professional racing drivers, understand that smoothness is necessary for speed. They can move quickly while staying safe for themselves and for other people because they learned smooth control first.
They did not start by being fast. They started slowly, learned how to be smooth, and only then became capable of doing things quickly. Everyone was not very good at driving at some point. That is normal. Part of the enjoyment is learning these skills gradually and feeling the car become calmer as your inputs improve.
The main thing is to practise. Start at low speeds. Make the accelerator input smoother. Remove the final jerk from your stops. Turn the wheel with one controlled motion instead of a series of sharp corrections. Then take the same habits onto faster roads when conditions allow it. Smoothness is not decoration; it is one of the core skills that separates a good driver from an average one.
