I Finally Drove My Dream Car: Lexus LC 500

An honest first drive of the Lexus LC 500, exploring its V8 character, design, comfort, compromises, and what achieving a dream really feels like.

Driving the 2026 Lexus LC 500 felt almost unreal because this car has been my dream car for a long time, and after finally experiencing it, it still is. The real question was whether it could live up to the expectations I had built from years of reading about it and imagining what it might feel like to drive.

The answer starts with why this specific Lexus became the dream in the first place: its attainability, five-liter V8, design, convertible experience, honest purpose, and ability to fit into real life.

An Attainable Kind of Dream Car

The first reason the LC 500 became my dream car is that it has always felt relatively attainable. That does not mean it is cheap. This car has stayed around the same general price point for years, roughly about 100,000 US dollars, and that is still a serious amount of money.

But from an optimistic point of view, the LC 500 has felt more reachable than many other dream cars. It is expensive, but not so far into fantasy territory that it becomes impossible to imagine.

The Five-Liter V8 Is the Centerpiece

The second reason is the engine. The LC 500 is powered by a five-liter V8 that has become legendary for Toyota and Lexus. It has appeared in many other cars, but here it feels tuned to deliver the best combination of performance, sound, and driving experience.

There are two major reasons this engine matters so much. First, it has a reputation for longevity and reliability. Second, the performance is wonderful. It is not just about speed as a number; it is about the way the engine responds and turns acceleration into an event.

The main advantage, though, is the sound. In Sport S Plus mode, with manual control selected, the downshifts are a huge part of the experience. The engine gives the whole car a sense of occasion. It is one of the best-sounding engines available in any car, and that sound is central to why the LC 500 feels special.

The Interior Feels Worth the Price

The next reason is the way the car looks and feels inside. The cabin is beautifully appointed and genuinely luxurious. Plenty of cars cost more than 100,000 US dollars and still feel cheap in places, but that is not the impression the LC 500 gives.

The small details matter. There is stitching throughout the cabin, and it makes the interior feel carefully finished rather than simply assembled. The door handle has a sculpture-like shape. The materials across the dash look and feel expensive. The whole space has the kind of attention that makes the price easier to understand.

The exterior carries the same feeling, especially with the soft top. The convertible roof suits the car beautifully. When Lexus asks this much money for the LC 500, the car delivers a level of design and finish that supports the price.

The Convertible Experience Adds Real Appeal

The fact that the LC 500 comes as a convertible is another major plus. I love convertibles because they deliver such a great driving experience. The open roof makes the sound, the weather, and the road feel more immediate.

Of course, convertibles have drawbacks, especially in colder weather. But the LC 500 is surprisingly usable even when it is cool outside. The climate system includes a scarf feature that warms your neck, and the car can also provide heated seats and a heated steering wheel. Those details mean driving with the top down in cold weather does not have to be miserable.

That matters because the convertible body is not just a styling choice here. It deepens the experience of the engine and makes those downshifts feel even more alive.

The LC 500 Is Honest About Its Purpose

One of the main reasons I love this car is that it is honest about what it wants to deliver. Many sports cars become harsh when they are driven in the real world.

The LC 500 is different. It is sublime to drive every day because the suspension is soft enough to make real roads comfortable, while the car still handles extremely well. It can move over imperfect pavement without punishing you, yet it still feels ready to carve a mountain road or a back road.

That balance shows that Lexus engineers knew where to put their money. The experience comes from the sound, the engine, the engagement, and the emotion.

Reliability and Value Make the Dream Easier to Keep

Another part of the appeal is that the LC 500 does not depreciate like many other luxury sports cars. If a car holds value better, you can imagine keeping it for a long time without worrying as much about losing a huge amount of money.

The reliability reputation adds to that confidence. Lexus has a strong reputation for building reliable cars, and this engine has a strong reputation as well. That means the ownership experience does not carry the same fear of constant expensive maintenance that surrounds some other luxury performance cars. People understand that, and it is one reason these cars do not fall as aggressively in value.

These are the main reasons the LC 500 became my dream car: it felt attainable, it had the right engine, it looked and felt expensive, it came as a convertible, it promised real-world comfort, and it seemed like a car that could be enjoyed for years.

It Delivers on the Promise

The important question is whether the car actually delivers on what it promises. It absolutely does.

In Sport S Plus mode, with manual control selected and a few gears dropped, the engine becomes magnificent. The downshifts are sharp and emotional, and repeating the same acceleration and downshift sequence still feels rewarding because the engine has so much character.

There is a common complaint that Lexus and Toyota transmissions are not fun because they are not always quick enough to react to driver inputs. But something special has been done with this car. The transmission feels fast and responsive.

The handling also supports the promise. The LC 500 is comfortable, but it does not feel lazy. The car proves that comfort and excitement do not have to be opposites.

The Dual Personality Is the Real Strength

Performance is only part of what makes the LC 500 work. The other major strength is its dual personality.

If you want to enjoy the day without constantly hearing a loud engine behind you, you can put the car into Eco mode and let it settle into luxury and comfort. It is the kind of car you can drive every day without becoming tired of it.

Many sports cars focus almost entirely on being sporty. The LC 500 gives you the emotion and sound when you want them, but it also gives you calmness when you are simply trying to enjoy the ride.

I do not think a car needs the harshest possible suspension to feel sporty. Lexus made the right choice by giving the LC 500 a softer setup, because that makes the car usable in real life. You can enjoy the performance and the sound of the engine on public roads without needing to go to a track. During my time with it, the car was every bit as enjoyable as I had imagined.

The Strange Feeling of Reaching a Dream

Driving the LC 500 also made me think about what it feels like to achieve a dream, whether that dream is big or small. When you have wanted something for a long time, you imagine yourself doing it, learn everything you can about the path toward it, and read what other people experienced. You build such a complete picture in your head that, when you finally reach the goal, it can feel as if you have already been there.

That is exactly what happened to me when I drove the LC 500 for the first time. I had read so many articles about it. I already knew how the engine was going to sound. I knew what to expect from the upshifts and downshifts. All of that knowledge slightly reduced the surprise.

The good news is that this strange feeling did not last long. In my case, it lasted about an hour. Then the reality of the moment took over. I was not just analyzing something I had imagined anymore. I was living the dream.

That realization felt deeply satisfying. I had dreamed about this car and worked to reach a position where driving it might become possible one day. I had focused on creating as much value as I could through my work, and in that moment it felt like the effort had led somewhere real.

It also quieted the kind of imposter syndrome that can follow any creative or professional effort. Like many people, I sometimes wonder whether I am doing the right thing or whether I am the right person to do it. Moments like this help answer that question. When you reach a goal you set for yourself, you can feel that the work was worth it.

Adulthood Makes Dreaming Harder

One thing I have noticed, even in myself, is that it becomes harder for adults to keep dreaming and keep setting goals. When you are a kid, life has guardrails. First there is kindergarten, then school, then college, and then the first job.

As soon as you get that first job, the path becomes less clear. Life becomes uncertain. There is no obvious next step automatically waiting for you.

When you are in school and want to go to college, the goal tells you what to do. You come home and prepare for college because that is the dream or big goal in front of you. After getting a first job, the question that can keep you up at night is different: what do you do with your evenings now?

I recognize that I am lucky and privileged in this respect. I do not have kids, so I may have more spare time than many people. But spare time by itself does not create direction. Direction comes when a dream becomes a goal, the goal becomes a plan, and the plan becomes smaller steps on an action list.

Dreams Turn Time Into Direction

Dreams and goals are one of the best ways to make life feel more meaningful and to make actions feel more worthwhile. The dream does not have to look anything like mine.

Someone might dream of getting a better job. Someone else might dream of having kids, finding the right partner, or buying a new gaming PC. The specific object or outcome is not the most important part.

What matters is that once you have a dream and turn it into a goal, you have the opportunity to create a plan. Then you can break that plan into actions.

Why the LC 500 Still Matters

The LC 500 lived up to the dream because it delivered the things I hoped it would deliver. The engine is emotional, the sound is incredible, the interior feels special, the convertible experience adds another layer, and the ride is comfortable enough for real life.

But the experience mattered for more than the car itself. It reminded me that reaching a dream can feel strangely familiar at first, especially when you have thought about it for years. Then, once the surprise gives way to reality, it can become proof that the work and planning were worthwhile.

The conclusion is simple: the Lexus LC 500 is still my dream car. It is special because it knows what it wants to deliver, and because it delivers those things with honesty, beauty, sound, comfort, and emotion.
